How to generate LESS TRAFFIC with Lotus Traveler and extend battery life

Vladislavs Tatarincevs  18 May 2009 15:57:00
Some time ago I have posted info about GPRS traffic.

I tested Traveler and used SMS for GPRS traffic,

I found that now I spend like 120KB per day, for my traffic,  This is nice.
One thing is cost, imagine you have 3000users, and for all of them you have to pay mobile phone bills,

and the second advantage is the Baterry life, my Nokia E71, runs at least 2 times more, then before.

more info on this in Traveler Wiki.

By default, Lotus Notes Traveler maintains a TCP connection between a device and the server that allows both to stay in snyc with each other.  Depending on several factors (network provider, NAT timeouts, device characteristics, etc.) maintaining this TCP connection can become a burden on the device's battery.  Changing Lotus Notes Traveler to use SMS mode for Auto Sync may greatly increase battery life.

NOTE: ONLY DO THIS IF YOU HAVE AN UNLIMITED SMS PLAN, OTHERWISE YOU MAY RECEIVE A VERY LARGE PHONE BILL.

1.  On the device, go into Lotus Notes Traveler's settings and choose "Auto Sync".
2.  Change the Network from "TCP" to "SMS email address"
3.  Fill in your specific SMS email binding.  This is usually your phone number followed by "@", then a carrier specific domain.

Here are some examples:
Sprint - [email protected]
AT&T - [email protected]

For more information, please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_carriers_providing_Email_or_Web_to_SMS
4.  Click Done a few times to exit the settings.

After following these steps, Lotus Notes Traveler will stop maintaining a constant TCP connection to the server, and will start using SMS to notify the device of server side changes.  These SMS messages are received silently by the Lotus Notes Traveler software on the device so this will not interfere with your use of SMS messaging.  This should significantly improve the times between battery recharges.
