Lotus Traveler is great, except Contact syncronization module

Traveler is a great software, people like it, unfortunally for many of them introduction with this nice, free (included in Notes) software sometimes is bad, because of Contact sync.

When people configure / setup Traveler, in MOST cases, their address book is erased. Majority of them dont have backups or old outdated backups.
I have noticed that if during initial sync contacted are not synchronized, and later sync is enabled, then it is fine.
In my Traveler installation, I prefer to DISABLE synchonization of contacts.
What about others?  Some one else has same issues?

Vlad, if me memory doens't fail, during the first installation there is a question about overwrite or merge contacts with the phone, isn't it? My experience about synchronizing contacts is that you need Notes 8 workstation client for a good experience. With Notes 7 is not so good.

Many customers complained that even choosing MERGE, contacts are erased. should test how works with 7.x/8.x/8.5 mailfiles.

I haven't lost any contacts when configuring Traveler on a phone. As Albert says, you need to think about the question before choosing merge or overwrite. Also it is a good idea to make sure your Notes contacts are synchronised with iNotes (this could cause some confusion).

Hi Vlad

Thank you for your blog - found lots of interesting regarding traveler.

I have two questions to you: may be you already solved these tasks:

1. I have iPhone 2G. I downloaded Lotus Companion from AppStore that had to give me ability to see my encrypted emails. I did everything what I had to do (uploaded my id, upgraded my Traveler to 8.5.1.1). It doesn't work. I still see only one message "This document is encrypted and requires the use of Lotus Notes or iNotes client to view the content". Can you help with this?

2. Another question. It seems like iPhone can sycnhronize only emails and calendar events but tasks can not be syncronized. Is it true or I messed something? I didn't fine how to get my tasks from Lotus Notes mail database.

For Lotus Companion you need firmware 3.x

well... on Nokia, Windows devices, ToDos are synchronized. In Apple seems it will be added a bit later... :)

Hi All,

I have an interesting one perhaps you can shed some light on for me. If we shut down our Traveler server or it loses connectivity to the network. . . . All my iPhone users lose their contacts.

Any ideas why that would be and how to prevent it from happening?

Sorry if this is a basic question, I am just starting to use Traveler for the first time.

Hi ,

We have several users reporting the issue, we thought initially that they didn't choose "merge" as requested but it seems that they did.

IBM isn't aware of that ... Did you find a workaround since then ?

Disabling contacts sync as you did might be a solution but it seems to be no way to prevent users enabling the contact feature if they want. How do you do that ?

Thank you !

Traveler does a good job with corporate contacts, but I can't get "my contacts" on my android phone. Has anyone else run into this?

Hi ewerybody,

I would like to know if it is possible to set up lotus traveler to keep contacts even if it doesn't have data connection.

Thanks

Marco

Hi Vlad,

We created an app that we think might be of interest to Notes users as an alternative to Traveler.

My Notes (www.mynotesapp.com) is a mobile app designed for work with IBM Notes applications from iPhone and Android. The app switches automatically between direct connection when in local Wi-Fi network and our cloud service when connected over the Internet. It's easy to install, not requiring any server-side manipulations or configuration changes, and supports multiple platforms (Linux, Mac OS X and Windows).

Please have a look at our demo video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-F0wOV2I0g Or try the app yourself. To get a free copy of My Notes app, please contact me. Maybe, this would be a good topic to review in your blog. I will be glad to answer any questions.

About us: Inexika (www.inexika.com) is a software development company founded in 2002 by Lotus developers. Besides providing various software development services, we aim at delivering quality products for IBM Notes users. We created such popular solutions for synchronization of IBM Notes data with Google as AweSync and Awesync.Mail (www.awesync.com)
